Our Breeding Policy

We have always bred Springers to suit ourselves. After a lifetimes experience in the breed we do not feel the need to change from the type we have always admired (Sh Ch Hawkhill Connaught and Ch Swallowtail of Shipden) so if the breed fashions change here in Australia (as they often do) we will not follow.

We have won a good number of ESS Specialties (15 ESS Ch Shows - not counting Gundog/sub group shows and not open shows..) and like to support the Breed Clubs, but have not attended so many recently as we feel that the playing field should be level and the judge be at least a Gundog specialist.

We chose our stud dogs carefully. Over the years we have used our own imports (including Eng Ch/Aus Ch Bomaris Envoy to Shipden Imp UK BOB at Crufts) and our home bred dogs plus 3 dogs from the Clanach Kennels. For our last 2 litters we were lucky enough to be able to use Chris Motbey's Ch Beautelle Th' Vigneron. A dog of lovely English type with all the health clearances and a pedigree to die for (Eng/NZ/Aus Ch Chuan Chablis of Lyndora Imp UK BOB Crufts x Ch Beautelle Desert Queen, one of the breeds great bitches).

Our last import Ch Shipden Michael Bentine (IMP UK) whilst not being fashionable and not having umteen Best in Shows to his name,has had a great influence on our ESS. His kids have great (naturally great with no help...) bombproof temperaments and the correct coat (double coat, easy care). Some are doing well in Agility and obedience with CD, AD, JD and TDX titles. His daughter Ch Alhambra Lily Savage is a great bitch standing or moving with lovely upper arm, pretty head and lovely dark eye and ring presence. His young granddaughter Alhambra Victoria Wood (By Th Vigneron) is one of our best - type, temperament, conformation and movement she has it all. She also has a great ring presence!

Expect our pedigrees to be entirely European and linebred to Connaught. Don't expect them to be the same as every other Australian Kennel. We have some unique combinations of wonderful bloodlines that cannot be found anywhere else. And there is more to come.

These days winning matters less to us. We have been there and done that and in the process have owned or bred some of Australia's Greatest Springers. Our Springers now are just as good if not better than our past legends, but the goalposts have changed a bit. Now we could change our type and go with the fashion, feel compromised but win plenty of group firsts or we can stick with the English type we have always had and show them regardless of the latest trends. We choose the latter. Pointscores are of limited interest and we are not interested in chasing breed records or making extravagant claims about the dogs or the kennel.

We do not lease dogs/breeding stock or enter into any partnerships with the Springers. Any bitch we breed with, we own outright.We do not breed a litter unless we intend keeping a puppy. Very few pups are available to show homes as you need a great deal of tenacity to show an English type in the current fashion here - and not everyone is as stubborn as us!
